Tips On Storing Coffee
More Detailed Information on Storing Coffee
What’s the best way to store coffee? To freeze or not to freeze? Should I put it in the refrigerator? There are many thoughts on this question but in the end, it’s what tastes good to you. We offer the following suggestions for ultimate freshness:
  • Purchase only the amount of coffee you think you’ll use in 3-4 weeks - It’s best to purchase whole bean coffee, then grind the amount you need for the cup or pot you’re making. If you want to grind enough for a few days, store the unused portion in an airtight container away from heat, light & moisture (your cupboard is a good place).
  • Coffee should be stored in an airtight container, preferably dark glass with either a screw-type or clamp top - Coffee has many enemies: air, light, heat & moisture affect its flavor greatly so you want to avoid these as much as you can. It’s always best to store your coffee in an airtight container, away from heat, light & moisture. Roasted beans will retain their flavor 4-5 weeks if stored this way. If you don’t have a glass container, you can store your beans in the one-way valve bag they come in. Just roll the top down to squeeze all of the air out and put it into the cupboard away from light, heat and moisture.
  • If long-term storage is required, you can freeze coffee - We don’t normally recommend refrigerating or freezing your coffee. Consider this: one of coffee’s enemies is moisture--if you freeze or refrigerate it, you’ll add moisture and that will destroy some of the flavors of your coffee. If it’s absolutely necessary (i.e. you’ll be out of town for a month and don’t want to leave your coffee out), it’s best to freeze the coffee BUT be sure to put it in an airtight container! When you're ready to brew some coffee, take out just the amount you need and bring that to room temp before grinding (i.e. avoid re-freezing and re-thawing the beans).
  • Store brewed coffee in a thermal carafe, never on a burner/warmer - Your coffee will remain fresh and tasty for 45 – 60 minutes after you brew it. If you want to store your brewed coffee longer, “prime” a thermal carafe with hot water, then pour the coffee into the carafe. Coffee left exposed to air and left on burners quickly deteriorates and has a “chemical taste”. Yuck!
